Preternatural Loveliness (2016-18)
A collection of flora of various genus that showcase the hybridity, symbiosis, and somewhat monstrous forms that have been synthesized in this marriage of the natural world and the man-made world. The flora are made through combining polyurethane spray foam, real plants, and preserved plants. Some incorporate the colors and styles of real life plants, some are a direct translation, while others are altered to become a new breed. These plants would not live together naturally. Much like in a greenhouse, these plants have been brought together under one roof: a space for them to grow as one, to observe their coexistence, and to be cared for and appreciated.
How much do we value plasticity in our lives? Can there be a place for both?
To what extent is our responsibility for incorporating nature in our lives, and what lengths will we go to abstain care?
Are bonsai plants any different from people?
Why, oh why, is a plastic orchid worth more than areal one at Ikea?
